Engine Borescope & Camera Scope

An engine borescope is a type of borescope that can fit into the small conduits of an engine and is considered a vital tool for any engine or machinery inspection job. Whether you are working on an aircraft engine or an automotive engine, an engine inspection camera provides the ability and convenience to visually inspect tight spaces that are otherwise impossible to see. As a favorite tool among engine specialists, engine scopes are known to help save time and workforce costs, by improving engine diagnostics efficiency. In fact, engine borescopes offer many benefits, including reducing the need to blindly disassemble machinery in order to locate an engine problem.

Borescopes for Engine Inspections

Trusted by engine experts of all kinds, engine scopes are one of the most important tools to have when conducting engine inspections or diagnosing an engine problem. Borescopes for engine inspections come in a variety of sizes such as micro borescopes, 4 mm borescopes, 6 mm borescopes, and larger. In addition, there is a wide range of engine borescope types from rigid scopes, to flexible borescopes. A popular choice among engine professionals are portable videoscopes which offer clear video capture during inspections. When conducting engine inspections, many engine inspectors need articulating borescopes as well as specialized borescope accessories to navigate through the complicated twist and turns of an engine. When purchasing a borescope, it is always important to consider how and what you will be using it for.

How Engine Borescopes Work

Using an engine borescope is easier than you might expect. To start, extend the probe and insert it into the entry point of your choice. This can be via an oil pan, through cylinder head ports, or any entry point that’s most convenient. Carefully snake the tool through the engine’s internal workings, paying close attention to the movement you see via a built-in monitor or computer screen. Take your time inspecting; when you’re done, gently remove the engine camera.

The entire inspection process can be as simple as that. Make sure you only perform inspection jobs when the engine is off and completely cool. This helps avoid damage to your engine camera scope (as well as harm to yourself). If at any point you struggle to get your borescope through a blockage, resist the urge to push through; force can cause damage to both the scope and the engine.
